Our face changes over the years, because age leaves no one untouched. Not only does the skin age and wrinkles form, but there is also an increasing redistribution of subcutaneous fatty tissue. We also lose bone mass. As a result, our cheeks and lower eyelid region sag, making our face appear tired and old.
With a healthy lifestyle, we can try to ensure that our age does not become quite so obvious. The ageing process cannot be stopped completely. However, modern plastic and aesthetic medicine has the ability to preserve your youthful appearance.
What types of wrinkles are there and what can we do about them?
The formation of wrinkles is a natural process. No one will be wrinkle-free for the rest of their life. But although we all get wrinkles, nobody is happy about it. However, not everyone is affected to the same extent and at the same time. Our genes are responsible for when we develop wrinkled skin. In addition to other characteristics such as hair color, eye color or the predisposition to gain weight quickly, we also inherit whether we get wrinkles early.
But our lifestyle is also crucial. With a conscious diet, for example, we can prevent severe skin ageing. Adequate amounts of fruit and vegetables help us to look fresh for a long time. We should also make sure we drink enough water – for an adult, around 2.5 liters per day is recommended, depending on body size.
On the other hand, we should avoid fatty foods, alcohol and cigarettes. Consuming these things not only has a negative effect on our internal organs, but also on our largest organ – our skin.
In addition to poor nutrition, environmental influences also have an effect on our skin. Frequent and heavy UV exposure causes the skin to age more quickly. Air pollution also has a negative impact on the skin.
A distinction is made between three different types of wrinkles: dynamic, static and actinic wrinkles. The decisive factor for classification is their origin:
Actinic wrinkles: When our skin dries out, it doesn’t look attractive. The wrinkles that form in this way are caused by heavy exposure to UV radiation.
Dynamic wrinkles: We laugh, frown and squint our eyes in the sun. We move our facial muscles and wrinkle the skin in the same places over and over again. The result: dynamic wrinkles.
Static wrinkles: If our skin loses moisture over the years, these wrinkles are visible.

The face loses contour and shape over the years
The contours of our face become spongy as we age. We lose bone mass and therefore volume. We find faces particularly attractive when they have a clear contour and, for example, pronounced cheekbones or a striking jawline. The chin line is known as the jawline. This area can hardly be trained. In general, the chances of restoring the face to the appearance it had when younger using conservative methods are slim. Plastic and aesthetic surgery can help.
We find faces with a V-shape attractive, but as we get older the V often becomes a U. We look fatter and no longer as fresh. This can be stressful – especially as you can’t counteract this development on your own. Many people feel their self-confidence dwindle when the lower jawline becomes blurred and “hamster cheeks” form.
