Sagging skin, wrinkles and bags under the eyes often make the face look tired, exhausted and older than you actually feel. With increasing age, the natural ageing process is particularly noticeable around the eyes. While some people are not bothered by this or accept the change, for others it can have a major impact on their self-confidence. An effective method to counteract this is a lower eyelid lift.
In this article, we will introduce you to various options for tightening the area under the eyes and restoring a youthful freshness to your face. We will also give you a comprehensive overview of the lower eyelid lift – both the aesthetic and medical aspects.
What is a lower eyelid lift?
The lower eyelid lift describes procedures that aim to get rid of excess skin, fat deposits and wrinkles in the lower eye area for a smoother result. This area is particularly sensitive as the skin around the eyes is very thin and prone to age-related changes. Over time, the skin loses elasticity, causing the eyelids to droop and bags under the eyes to form. Various methods of lower eyelid lifting can effectively counteract these changes and rejuvenate the face overall.
Aesthetic and medical reasons for a lower eyelid lift
In addition to the aesthetic desire to look more alert and fresh again, there are also medical reasons to consider a lower eyelid lift. In some cases, excess skin on the eyelids can restrict vision and severely impair the well-being of the women and men affected. Bags under the eyes can also be unpleasant, for example if they press on the surrounding tissue.
From an aesthetic point of view, however, a lower eyelid lift not only has a limited effect on the area around the eyes, but can also have a positive effect on the entire face. A clear, alert look makes the face appear younger and fresher overall. Many of our patients report that they not only feel better visually after a lower eyelid lift, but also emotionally, as they are back in harmony with their appearance.

Treatment methods: from non-invasive to surgical
A lower eyelid lift can be performed in different ways depending on the severity of the sagging skin and the individual needs of the patient. In our Frankfurt practice, we have had good experience with non-invasive and minimally invasive as well as surgical methods.
Non-invasive methods: CO2 laser
It doesn’t always have to be a surgical procedure. Patients who would prefer not to undergo surgery can opt for non-invasive alternatives to rejuvenate the eye area. This involves external treatment without damaging the deeper tissue. A classic example is the CO2 laser.
The treating specialist uses a handpiece to move over the skin of the lower eyelid. A high-precision laser beam removes the uppermost layers of skin and stimulates collagen production at the same time. This tightens the skin, reduces fine wrinkles and regenerates the tissue.
Laser treatment is a particularly effective method for mild to moderate skin sagging. This technique requires only a short recovery time and the results are visible after just a few weeks.
Minimally invasive procedures: Filler
A very popular, minimally invasive treatment is injecting the eyelids with fillers such as hyaluronic acid. They are injected specifically into the tissue to compensate for volume loss and make the skin appear smooth and firm again.
Fillers are particularly suitable for people whose skin sagging is not yet so pronounced. The advantage of this method is that it can be performed quickly and does not cause any downtime. The result is immediately visible and usually lasts for several months before a touch-up is required.
Surgical procedures: Lower eyelid lift
For more pronounced bags under the eyes or deeper skin sagging, a surgical eyelid lift is the best solution. During this procedure, which is performed under local anesthesia or twilight sleep, excess skin is surgically removed and the underlying muscles are tightened. In addition, fat pads that cause bags under the eyes can be redistributed or completely removed.
The surgical lower eyelid lift allows for targeted and long-lasting results, but also includes a downtime of approx. 10 days as well as post-operative aftercare.
Combination of lower eyelid lift surgery with other procedures
Eyelid surgery can be easily combined with a wide range of aesthetic procedures. In this way, a harmonious overall result can be achieved relatively easily and without additional follow-up treatment, entirely according to the patient’s individual wishes.
A lower eyelid lift is often combined with an upper eyelid lift, for example in the case of drooping eyelids. However, a facelift or smaller, minimally invasive treatments, such as filling wrinkles in the cheek area with hyaluronic acid or autologous fat, can also be performed very well in one session.
In a personal consultation, we will be happy to discuss with you which combinations make sense in your individual case and what options there are for optimally implementing your wishes.
