What is a Hylase treatment and when is it used?

dr abuagela hylase treatment

Anyone who wants fuller lips quickly ends up with hyaluronic acid injections for the lips. But what happens if the result is unsatisfactory or even if lumps form? There is a solution: hyaluronidase. Known under the trade name hylase, the enzyme dissolves the chained molecular bonds and makes unsatisfactory injection results and encapsulations disappear. Hyaluronidase is already present in the body as an enzyme and helps to break down hyaluronic acid every day and is injected specifically into the desired areas.

When does Hylase treatment make sense?

A hyaluronic acid treatment is ideal for correcting dark circles under the eyes, plumping up mouth and nose wrinkles or injecting lips. The hyaluronic acid cushions are dissolved by the body after a few months anyway. This is also the case with highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid, which is used when the result needs to last for a particularly long time, for example in cheek augmentation. However, these injections are not permanent either. The same applies to unfortunate treatment results. In some cases, it therefore makes sense to simply wait until the body has broken down the hyaluronic acid on its own.

Hylase is intended for serious cases: If the treatment result is so uneven and asymmetrical that it virtually disfigures the wearer, treatment with Hylase can help to dissolve the inserted filler again.

Hylase can be used for

  • Undesirable swellings,
  • Asymmetries and
  • Nodules, e.g. in the lip.

When used correctly, Hylase helps the patient to achieve their desired result.

Nodules in the lip after hyaluronic filler – what to do?

If nodules appear in the lip after a hyaluronic acid injection, this is an encapsulation, a so-called granuloma. This is an undesirable side effect of the injection. Although it is normal to feel bulges or nodules in the lip shortly after treatment, these and any swelling should have completely disappeared after 14 days. If this is not the case, it is referred to as a foreign body granuloma. The body has not recognized the hyaluronic acid preparation as body-like and degradable and forms a protective shell around the foreign body to prevent it from spreading further in the body. This can also happen if high-quality hyaluronic acid preparations are not used, as these can be contaminated and thus promote the formation of granulomas. Incorrect injections can also promote the formation of granulomas.

Depending on the size of the remaining nodules, the doctor will decide together with the patient how to proceed. In the case of small nodules, it is possible to wait until the body releases the encapsulation on its own. However, if the encapsulation is very large and causes severe asymmetry, e.g. in the lips, dissolving the hyaluronic acid with hylase in the lips may be an option.

Are there any side effects with Hylase?

As an enzyme, hyaluronidase makes no distinction between exogenous and endogenous hyaluronan. The treatment should therefore only be carried out by trained doctors. The doctor can estimate how much hylase is needed during the injection to dissolve the encapsulation without also dissolving the body’s own hyaluron. The result of breaking down the body’s own hyaluronic acid would be unsightly dents or depressions in the treated area. However, these are not permanent. The body generally recognizes the imbalance quickly and compensates for it by producing the body’s own hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronidase is only used in extreme cases, for example to correct gross errors in lip injections or to dissolve long-lasting encapsulations. Normally, however, hyaluronic acid should be injected so carefully and judiciously that no hylase correction is necessary. This is another reason why it is important to choose a competent practitioner.

FAQ

What are the costs of Hylase treatment?

The cost of a Hylase treatment depends on the treatment area. With Dr. Abuagela, the Hylase treatment starts at €250.

What is your experience with Hylase?

The use of Hylase enables the reliable dissolution of overcorrections with hyaluronic acid. Experienced doctors can expect reliable, satisfactory results.

How long does it take for Hylase to take effect?

Hylase is effective within the first 4 hours after injection. After that, no further degradation is to be expected. However, slight swelling may mask the result. A new Hylase treatment should only be carried out after any bruising or swelling has healed.
