Laser therapy for scars
Permanently improve disruptive scar tissue
Scars can be more than just visually annoying: If they are on the face, décolleté or in movable areas (e.g. shoulders, elbows, knees), they are noticeable in everyday life, can rub against clothing, are tight or itchy – sometimes they even restrict mobility. Many patients therefore want an effective improvement – without surgery. Modern fractionated lasers can help here. They smooth uneven surfaces, soften hard edges, harmonize colour differences and can reduce the feeling of tension.
In our Frankfurt practice, we discuss your initial situation openly and set realistic goals. Dr. Abuagela and his team combine experience with the latest technology to achieve gentle, natural results for you.
Your advantages:
- Reduction of acne scars, surgical scars and accident scars
- Smoother texture and softer scar edges
- More pleasant skin tension, often less itching
- Non-surgical procedure
- Gradual collagen build-up for lasting results

What does laser treatment do for scars?
Scar tissue differs from healthy skin in terms of fiber density, elasticity and color. This is precisely what causes the typical symptoms: The area appears bumpy, raises or lowers, can be tight, itchy or rub against clothing. Many scars only improve to a limited extent over time; although creams or oils care for the skin, they usually hardly change the internal structures. If the appearance or discomfort is a problem in everyday life, targeted therapy is advisable.
The laser sends fine, punctual impulses into the scar and the surrounding area. These stimuli trigger regeneration processes: Collagen fibers form anew, hardening softens, transitions smooth out and the color tone becomes more even. The aim is not to “conjure away” the scar, but to achieve a clear, natural-looking improvement in the surface, suppleness and appearance.
Not every scar needs laser treatment. Fresh, still reddish scars can initially be treated with gentle care, massage and sun protection. We will check with you whether and when the laser is the right next step.
Treatment methods
Scar treatment options in Frankfurt
Laser treatment
Fractionated lasers (ablative or non-ablative) deliver microscopic pulses to the scar and surrounding tissue. The aim is to reduce unevenness, refine the surface and improve elasticity. We adapt the intensity and density to the scar type and skin region; several sessions often lead to a better effect with continuous smoothing.
Surgical scar correction
In the case of wide, heavily indented, bulging or functionally disruptive scars, a minor procedure may be advisable. The affected area is surgically removed and closed with fine, low-tension sutures. Modern techniques and adapted incisions can create the conditions for a much more discreet, smoother scar. We discuss the indication together and weigh up the effort, recovery time and expected result.
Microneedling and PRP (autologous plasma)
Fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin and stimulate repair processes; PRP supplies the body’s own growth factors. This combination can improve tissue quality, particularly in the case of atrophic acne scars or large, sensitive areas, and is also suitable if a shorter downtime is desired.
Cortisone injections
In the case of raised, firm scars (hypertrophic scars or keloids), low-dose cortisone injections can weaken the excessive connective tissue. The tissue becomes softer and flatter; we often combine this with laser sessions as soon as the activity has decreased.
Combination therapies
Mixed concepts often achieve the most convincing results: Laser in combination with needling and PRP, selective cortisone for thickened areas or – for more pronounced forms – upstream surgical correction followed by laser finishing. The plan is created individually and tailored to your wishes.
How does a laser scar treatment in Frankfurt work?
Risks
What are the risks of laser treatment for scars?
If carried out correctly, it is a well-tolerated treatment. The usual, temporary side effects are redness, swelling, a feeling of warmth and fine bruising; occasionally small bruises occur. With consistent sun protection, pigment shifts can usually be avoided; infections or herpes reactivations are rare. Depending on the intensity of the treatment, you will often be able to socialize again quickly after the session; slight residual redness may still be visible for a few days.
