Wrinkles are a natural part of the ageing process. Over time, the skin loses elasticity and firmness, which can lead to fine lines and even deep furrows on the face. However, not every wrinkle is the same, there are also differences. In the following, we will look at the different types of wrinkles and show you how to prevent and treat them.
These are the different types of pleats
There are basically three different types of wrinkles: dynamic, static and actinic wrinkles. Each type has its own characteristics and causes.
Dynamic folds
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by the movement of our facial muscles. Over time, repeated movements such as laughing, frowning or squinting leave their mark in the form of wrinkles. The best-known examples of dynamic wrinkles are laugh lines around the eyes (crow’s feet) and forehead wrinkles.
Static folds
In contrast to dynamic wrinkles, static wrinkles occur independently of our facial expressions. They are the result of age-related loss of collagen and elastin, which causes the skin to sag and form wrinkles. Nasolabial folds (wrinkles between the nose and the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (wrinkles from the corners of the mouth to the chin) and neck wrinkles are typical examples of static wrinkles.
Actinic wrinkles
Actinic wrinkles are caused by damage from sun exposure and UV radiation. Too much sun exposure leads to premature skin ageing, dehydration and wrinkling. Typical signs of actinic wrinkles are fine lines around the lips, cheeks and forehead.

How can wrinkles be prevented?
Although wrinkles are a natural part of the ageing process, certain measures can help to slow down their formation:
- Healthy diet
A balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables provides important nutrients that can contribute to the health and elasticity of the skin. Pay particular attention to foods that are rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins. - Drink plenty
Drink enough water to keep your skin hydrated and elastic. Adequate hydration also helps to flush toxins from the body. - Sun protection
Protect your skin from harmful UV radiation by using sunscreen with a high sun protection factor and covering your skin with clothing and hats if you are going to be out in the sun for a long time. - Avoid nicotine
Smoking accelerates the ageing process of the skin and therefore increases the risk of wrinkles forming. If you do not smoke, you can therefore also reduce the appearance of wrinkles. - Get enough sleep
Sufficient sleep and good quality sleep are important to support skin regeneration. By the way: If you sleep on your back as a woman, this can prevent the development of décolleté wrinkles. - Avoid stress
Stress can also lead to premature skin ageing. Find strategies for coping with stress, such as regular relaxation exercises, meditation or pursuing your hobbies.
What treatment methods are available for wrinkles?
If you already have wrinkles, this does not automatically mean that you have to put up with them. Of course, wrinkles are part of life and give everyone their characteristic appearance. But if you just can’t get used to them and want to turn back the clock a little, there are various treatment methods that can help to improve their appearance.
One option for treating wrinkles is a facelift. This surgical procedure tightens and smoothes the skin on the face and neck to achieve a more youthful appearance. A facelift can offer long-lasting results, but is associated with a longer recovery time and requires careful aftercare. Non-invasive alternatives include medical cosmetic treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser therapy, which can also help to reduce wrinkles. These procedures help to remove dead skin cells, stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.
Wrinkle injections are another popular minimally invasive method. Botulinum toxin (Botox®), which is suitable for expression lines, i.e. dynamic wrinkles, and hyaluronic acid against static wrinkles and to compensate for loss of volume are particularly noteworthy here.
Every person has individual needs and the best treatment method for wrinkles can therefore vary from case to case. We will be happy to advise you on your options.
