Definition of
What is an ear correction?
Ear correction – also known as otopexy – is a surgical procedure used to harmonize the shape, size or position of the ears. It is often performed to create protruding ears or to correct asymmetrical ear shapes. The aim is to achieve a natural, balanced appearance that blends harmoniously with the individual facial features.
The procedure can be performed for aesthetic reasons as well as after injuries or congenital malformations. In most cases, the operation is performed under local anesthesia, making the procedure very gentle for patients. Ear correction can provide a lasting boost to self-confidence, especially for people who find their ear shape annoying or have suffered from teasing. Using modern surgical techniques, the result is achieved permanently, precisely and with as little scarring as possible – for a natural and harmonious overall facial appearance.
Treatment methods
Options for ear correction in Frankfurt
In Frankfurt, state-of-the-art treatment methods are available to help you achieve a better quality of life and a natural, harmonious appearance. On request, ear correction can also be combined with earlobe correction.
Classic ear pinning surgery (otopexy)
Classic ear pinning surgery (otopexy)
The proven surgical solution for long-lasting results. Under local or general anesthesia, the ear cartilage is gently sculpted and repositioned – for a life without insecurity. The procedure is possible from the age of 6 and offers permanent correction of protruding ears with natural-looking results. There are only minimally visible scars behind the ear.
Earfold™ method – the minimally invasive alternative

For all those who like it quick and uncomplicated: the ears are created in just 15 minutes under local anesthesia using tiny titanium implants. No long operation, no general anesthetic – you can go straight home. Perfect for quick, visible results, working people with little time and anxious patients.

Ear correction for children
Ear correction for children
Children and adolescents in particular suffer from protruding ears and are often teased by their peers. There is no ideal age for ear correction. Although surgery is possible for young children, it is not always desirable. A child who wants to have symmetrical and close-fitting ears will cooperate much better and be less stressed by such treatment. The plastic surgeon can only act as a consultant here – Dr. Nauras Abuagela is happy to fulfill this task in a personal consultation in our practice in Frankfurt.
How does ear correction work?
Risks
What are the risks of an ear correction?
As with any surgical procedure, ear correction can also involve risks, which we would like to discuss openly with you. However, in experienced hands and with careful aftercare, complications are very rare. Possible risks include slight swelling, bruising and temporary numbness in the ear area, which usually disappear completely within a few weeks. In rare cases, infections, wound healing disorders or minor asymmetries may occur.
The good news: by choosing an experienced specialist, sterile operating conditions and your conscientious adherence to the aftercare instructions, we minimize these risks to a minimum. During your detailed consultation, we will inform you individually about all risks and answer all your questions – because your safety and well-being are our top priority.

FAQ
Answers to frequently asked patient questions about ear correction
At what age is ear correction possible?
At what age is ear correction possible?
Ear correction can be performed from the age of 6 as soon as ear growth is largely complete. In children, the procedure is often recommended before they start school. There is no upper age limit – correction is possible at any age and leads to natural, aesthetic results.
Is the ear correction treatment painful?
Is the ear correction treatment painful?
You will not feel any pain during the procedure due to the anesthesia. Postoperatively, you may experience slight feelings of tension and tenderness, but these can be easily treated with standard analgesics. The discomfort is usually moderate and subsides significantly within a few days.
How long does it take to heal after ear correction?
How long does it take to heal after ear correction?
The initial swelling will disappear within 1-2 weeks. After around 7-10 days, you will be able to socialize and work again. The final aesthetic result will be visible after about 6 weeks, when all swelling has completely subsided. Sports activities should be suspended for 4-6 weeks so as not to impair the healing process.
Are the scars from the ear correction visible?
Are the scars from the ear correction visible?
Scarring is minimal. In classic otopexy, the incision is made behind the pinna in the natural skin fold, which means that scars are practically invisible later on. In minimally invasive procedures such as the Earfold™ method, only punctiform puncture sites are created, which are barely noticeable after a short time.
How long do the results of ear correction last?
How long do the results of ear correction last?
The result of a professionally performed ear correction is usually permanent. The reshaped cartilage retains its new position permanently. In very rare cases, minimal changes may occur, especially if postoperative behavioral recommendations are not followed consistently. The long-term stability of the result is over 95%.
Can I go home immediately after the ear correction surgery?
Can I go home immediately after the ear correction surgery?
Ear correction is usually performed on an outpatient basis. After an appropriate monitoring phase, you can be discharged into home care on the same day – ideally accompanied by someone you trust. A short inpatient stay can also be arranged in the case of general anesthesia or on individual request.
When can I go back to work after the ear correction?
When can I go back to work after the ear correction?
In most cases, the ability to work is restored after 7-10 days. In the case of predominantly sedentary activities without physical strain, a return to work is often possible earlier. It is important to take it easy and wear a head bandage or headband consistently for the first few weeks.
Can the ear correction be reversed?
Can the ear correction be reversed?
A revision is technically possible in principle, but is extremely rarely desired in practice. Patient satisfaction with ear corrections is over 90 %. If the result does not meet expectations, targeted corrections can be carried out. A complete return to the original state is complex and is extremely rare.
What happens if I am dissatisfied with the result of the ear correction?
What happens if I am dissatisfied with the result of the ear correction?
Your satisfaction is the focus of our treatment. In the rare cases in which the result does not meet the jointly defined expectations, we evaluate the situation carefully and discuss possible optimizations. Minor adjustments can usually be easily implemented. We minimize the risk of discrepancies between expectations and results through preoperative consultation and visualization.
Does the headband have to be worn consistently after the ear correction?
Does the headband have to be worn consistently after the ear correction?
Yes, the headband is an essential part of post-operative care. It protects the ears from mechanical stress, especially during sleep, and ensures optimal positioning during the critical healing phase. It should be worn continuously for the first two weeks and then nightly for a further four weeks. Consistent compliance is crucial for a stable, long-term result.
Are both ears operated on at the same time during an ear correction?
Are both ears operated on at the same time during an ear correction?
As a rule, bilateral correction is performed in one session, as this is optimal from an esthetic point of view and enables harmonious symmetry. A unilateral correction can of course also be performed at the patient’s request or if medically indicated.
Does health insurance cover the costs of ear correction?
Does health insurance cover the costs of ear correction?
Children and adolescents with documented psychosocial stress are often entitled to reimbursement by statutory health insurance companies. Congenital malformations or post-traumatic deformities can also justify reimbursement. In adults, otopexy is usually classified as an aesthetic procedure. Private health insurance companies handle this individually.
