Definition of
What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia refers to abnormally enlarged breasts in men. A distinction is made between
- true gynecomastia – enlargement of the mammary gland tissue, usually not influenced by exercise or diet.
- Pseudo-gynecomastia – accumulation of fat in the breast region, often caused by obesity and treatable with exercise or weight loss.
In many cases, gynecomastia occurs on both sides, but it is also possible for problems to occur unilaterally. It is important to remember that gynecomastia is not the disease, but merely a symptom. Depending on the degree of severity, a feeling of pressure, tightness and pain are possible and increase in proportion to the size of the breast. However, pain can also be completely absent. Those affected often suffer psychologically from enlarged male breasts.
However, gynecomastia does not always have to be pathological and permanent. Although this is often the case in adult men, gynecomastia can occur in adolescents as a side effect of puberty. As a rule, it then subsides with further development, so that those affected have normal-sized breasts towards the end of puberty.
Symptoms of gynecomastia
There are three different degrees of gynecomastia:
Grade 1: The breast is slightly enlarged, as are the mammary glands. There is still no excess skin and the gynecomastia is not yet perceived as particularly disturbing.
Grade 2: A slight excess of skin can be seen, the breast is already significantly enlarged, causes some problems with movement and can cause slight pain. An underbust fold is not yet visible.
Grade 3: The breast is greatly enlarged and resembles the female breast shape. Both a clear excess of skin and an underbust fold are visible. Movement is increasingly restricted and pain occurs frequently.
Treatment methods
Breast reduction options for men
For true gynecomastia
For true gynecomastia
If the glandular tissue is enlarged, it can be surgically removed. The procedure is performed through fine incisions in the skin and – in the hands of experienced specialists – is considered particularly safe.
For pseudo-gynecomastia
For pseudo-gynecomastia
If the enlarged breast is due to excess fatty tissue, gentle liposuction is used. This method leaves only minimal scars and enables a natural result with a short recovery time.
Combination of both methods
Combination of both methods
A so-called mixed finding often occurs – i.e. both increased fat and glandular tissue. In such cases, we combine both methods to achieve a flat, masculine breast contour.
Many years of expertise and the highest safety and quality standards allow us to perform gynecomastia surgery in our Frankfurt practice on an outpatient basis so that patients can return home on the same day. We use state-of-the-art methods and technologies, such as VASER® liposuction, a procedure that not only removes excess fatty tissue but also uses ultrasound to precisely define the contours of the pectoral muscle. This method is particularly suitable for athletic patients who want an aesthetically defined and masculine chest.

What can cause gynecomastia?
What can cause gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia can be caused by hormonal changes, genetic predisposition, obesity or certain medications. It often occurs in three phases of life: in newborns (due to maternal hormones), during puberty (temporary breast growth) and in old age (due to decreasing testosterone and increased fatty tissue). Diseases of the liver, kidneys or hormone-producing organs as well as tumors can also cause abnormal gynecomastia. A thorough medical examination should therefore always be carried out before treatment.
