What is a facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure in which sagging tissue in the face and neck is tightened in order to achieve a more youthful, harmonious appearance. The incisions are made in such a way that they are barely visible – usually along the ears or in the hairline.

The following structures are usually treated during a facelift:

Skin: Excess skin is removed to create a smooth appearance.
Subcutaneous and muscle tissue: The SMAS tissue (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) is often tightened to increase durability.
Fat pads: They are repositioned or reduced locally to improve facial contours.

Treatment methods

Facelift options in Frankfurt

In principle, two treatment approaches can be combined to tighten facial areas: Volume augmentation with autologous fat and the classic facelift. Depending on the extent of the procedure, the small skin lift, the facelift with and without autologous fat and the full facelift are used.

The big facelift

A comprehensive surgical procedure that removes excess skin and tightens the underlying tissue.

During the treatment, the plastic surgeon makes inconspicuous incisions above the hairline up to behind the ears. From there, he carefully removes the skin and underlying tissue layers up to the corners of the mouth, nostrils or eyebrows, depending on the treatment goal. Finally, he tightens the connective tissue as well as the fatty tissue and muscles in the direction of the forehead and ears. A mask-like appearance is avoided by the specialist carefully smoothing out the upper layer of skin or trimming excess tissue.

The mini facelift

A gentler procedure with smaller incisions, ideal for patients with early signs of sagging skin. It offers a shorter downtime and less visible scars.

This smaller procedure involves shorter incisions, allowing the plastic and aesthetic surgeon to tighten only parts of the face. However, not only the upper but also the lower tissue is tightened. This method is often used on the cheeks to counteract the so-called “hamster cheeks” or to correct the chin line. Not only is the procedure smaller than the major facelift, the recovery time is also correspondingly shorter.

Minimally invasive lifts

You can also choose from minimally invasive treatments at our practice in Frankfurt, such as a thread lift or treatments with Botox (botulinum toxin) or hyaluronic acid.

The treatment

The facelift is performed under local anesthesia with twilight sleep or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure. Anesthesia is administered first so that no pain is felt during the procedure. Excess skin is then removed and the underlying tissue is tightened to achieve a harmonious contour. The incisions are made in such a way that they are barely visible later (often along the ears and in the hairline). The procedure usually takes 1-3 hours, depending on the method and extent. After a short monitoring period, you can leave the practice or clinic.

The aftercare

The recovery time depends on the individual, but you will generally be able to socialize after 7-14 days. Light activities are possible shortly after the operation, while sport and more intensive physical activity can be resumed after around 2-3 weeks. Aftercare following a facelift usually involves cooling, resting the treated areas and taking any prescribed pain medication.
